What is it?

Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate — an amino-surfactant, a concentrate of coconut fatty acids and sodium salt of glutamic acid. Weakly anionic. Cleanses at pH 5-6 — close to the natural pH of the skin (4.5-5.5). COSMOS compatible. In INCI: Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate. Variant: Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate.

The main or sole surfactant in premium cleansing products for sensitive, atopic, and infant skin. Popular in Japanese cosmetics and clean beauty.

Key Benefits

Cleansing at skin pH
Active at pH 5-6 — does not disrupt the skin's acid mantle (pH 4.5-5.5). Unlike SLS, it does not raise the surface pH of the skin, preserving the protective function.
Does not disrupt barrier function
Clinical studies confirm that with regular use, it does not increase TEWL and does not reduce the moisture of the stratum corneum — unlike SLS and SLES.
COSMOS organic, natural origin
Derived from coconut oil and fermented glutamic acid — certified COSMOS as a natural surfactant for organic cosmetics.

Glutamate surfactants — hierarchy of gentleness

Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate → Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate → Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate (the mildest, but expensive). All are premium amino-surfactants, much gentler than SLES. Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate is the gold standard in Japanese dermatological cosmetics (Curel, Kao).
