What is it?

Retinyl Retinoate — an ester in which the retinol (retinol/vitamin A alcohol) molecule is connected to the retinoic acid molecule (retinoic acid). Upon application to the skin, it gradually hydrolyzes, releasing both forms. Effectiveness comparison: Retinyl Retinoate > Retinol >> Retinyl Palmitate. Synthesized by Korean scientists, popular in K-beauty and premium formulas.

Anti-aging serums and night creams for wrinkle correction, increasing skin density, and even tone. An alternative to retinol for those who cannot tolerate classic retinol irritation. Recommended concentration: 0.01–0.1%.

Key Benefits

High effectiveness without retinol irritation
Retinyl Retinoate demonstrates effectiveness comparable to 0.05–0.1% retinol with significantly less irritation. A clinical study (2008) showed: 0.06% Retinyl Retinoate = more effective than 0.075% retinol in increasing collagen synthesis, but with less redness and peeling.
Stimulation of collagen and elastin synthesis
Like all retinoids, Retinyl Retinoate activates RAR/RXR receptors, stimulates fibroblasts to synthesize type I and III collagen, and inhibits MMP (matrix metalloproteinases) that break down collagen. The result — firm, elastic skin with fewer wrinkles.
Stability and ease of use
More stable in formulas than retinol (less prone to oxidation). Can be used day and night — does not require a strict "only at night" regimen. Slow release of active forms reduces peak load on the skin.

Comparison of retinoids

Tretinoin (retinoic acid) — the most effective, prescription-only, very irritating. Retinyl Retinoate — second in strength, over-the-counter. Retinol — popular, moderate irritation. Retinyl Palmitate — the mildest, minimal effectiveness. Retinyl Retinoate — optimal balance of strength/tolerance.
