What is it?

Quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) — a flavonoid found in onions, apples, capers, and green tea. INCI: Quercetin. MW 302 Da. Practically insoluble in water — often used in cosmetics in the form of liposomes or cyclodextrin complexes to enhance bioavailability. Concentration: 0.01–1%.

Antioxidant serums and products for sensitive skin. A synergist of vitamin C — prolongs its stability in formulations. Effective in products for redness and reactive skin.

Key Benefits

Powerful antioxidant and UV protection
Quercetin absorbs UV rays (especially UVA) and neutralizes free radicals. Protects cell DNA from photodamage. Synergistic with vitamins C and E — together they form a powerful antioxidant complex.
Anti-inflammatory and antihistamine action
Quercetin inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells — reduces redness and skin reactivity. Suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α). Effective in atopic dermatitis and rosacea.
Stabilizer of vitamin C in formulations
Quercetin protects ascorbic acid from oxidation in formulations, prolonging the active life of vitamin C. Therefore, they are often combined in one serum. Additionally enhances each other's antioxidant effect.

Quercetin vs Kaempferol vs Rutin

All three — flavonoids with similar structures. Quercetin is the most studied and effective in cosmetics. Rutin — more water-soluble, better for strengthening capillaries. Kaempferol — less anti-inflammatory, more antibacterial. In most formulations, quercetin is used as the gold standard of flavonoids.
