What is it?

Polyisobutene (PIB) and Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (HPIB) — synthetic isobutylene polymers. PIB — liquid, sticky, glossy. HPIB — saturated, more stable, less sticky. Functions: film-former, gloss agent, emollient, thickener in anhydrous systems. In INCI: Polyisobutene / Hydrogenated Polyisobutene.

Key component of lip gloss, liquid lipsticks, and highlighters. Also in waterproof mascaras and eyeshadows. In skincare products — a lightweight emollient without greasiness.

Key Benefits

Perfect gloss in lip gloss
Polyisobutene is the ingredient responsible for the characteristic mirror-like shine and "jelly" texture of lip gloss. It forms a flexible transparent film with maximum light reflection.
Waterproofness and long-lasting hold
Hydrogenated Polyisobutene forms a water-repellent film — a basic component of waterproof mascaras and eyeshadows with long-wear formulas.
Lightweight emollient without occlusion
HPIB in skincare products — a lightweight non-occlusive emollient that does not clog pores and leaves a dry feel compared to mineral oil.

PIB vs mineral oil

Polyisobutene and mineral oil — both hydrocarbons, but different. PIB — a polymer (larger molecule), more glossy and film-forming. Mineral oil — lighter, occlusive. HPIB is a lighter and more modern substitute for mineral oil in contemporary formulas.
