Phenylalanine
The essential aromatic amino acid — phenylalanine is a precursor of tyrosine and melanin, is part of NMF, and participates in the synthesis of structural proteins in the skin. In the context of cosmetics, its role is rather supportive: NMF hydration and part of the amino acid profile of the formula.
What is it?
Phenylalanine (фенілаланін, Phe) — an essential aromatic amino acid. In INCI: Phenylalanine. Metabolic precursor of tyrosine → DOPA → melanin. Part of the skin's NMF. Also a precursor of catecholamines (dopamine, adrenaline) — neurotransmitters that affect the skin's stress response.
NMF-active in complex amino acid serums. Present in products with Amino Acid Complex as part of the complete NMF-amino acid profile. The context of pigmentation is important for understanding skin biochemistry, but in finished cosmetics, phenylalanine is not a typical brightening active.

Main Actions
Phenylalanine is at the beginning of the melaninogenesis pathway, but this does not mean it brightens or darkens the skin at typical cosmetic concentrations. For working with pigmentation, tyrosinase inhibitors, SPF, and anti-inflammatory actives are usually sought, and phenylalanine in the formula should be perceived as an NMF-amino acid.
