Methylpropanediol
A powerful active ingredient carrier — methylpropanediol (MPD) is particularly valued for its ability to significantly enhance the penetration of active components through the stratum corneum. It is often found in concentrated serums with retinol, peptides, and AHA acids.
What is it?
Methylpropanediol (2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, MPD) is a synthetic diol. In INCI: Methylpropanediol. Structurally similar to butylene glycol and propylene glycol, but with a more pronounced penetration-enhancing profile. A colorless, odorless liquid with low viscosity. It effectively dissolves both polar and moderately non-polar actives.
A carrier and solvent in concentrated serums and treatment formulas. Particularly effective in combination with retinol, AHA/BHA, vitamin C, and peptides — it enhances their bioavailability and effectiveness. It is also used as a sensory modifier.

Main Actions
MPD enhances the penetration of ALL components, including potentially irritating ones. Serums with MPD + retinol or MPD + AHA can be more aggressive for sensitive skin. Start with a patch test and infrequent use, especially if the skin is reactive.
