What is it?

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) — a hormone that regulates the sleep/wake cycle. The skin has its own melatonin receptors (MT1, MT2) and synthesizes it locally. INCI: Melatonin. A powerful antioxidant — more effective than vitamin E in protecting against hydroxyl radicals. Concentration in cosmetics: 0.0005–0.1%. Lipid-soluble, penetrates well through the stratum corneum.

Night creams and serums for restoration and protection. Synchronizes skin function with the natural cycle. Effective for skin showing signs of stress, fatigue, and disrupted sleep patterns.

Key Benefits

A powerful antioxidant — especially at night
Melatonin neutralizes hydroxyl radicals (•OH) — the most aggressive free radicals. More effective than vitamin E in this reaction. At night, when the skin regenerates most actively, melatonin protects cells from oxidative damage.
Synchronization of the skin's circadian rhythm
The skin has an internal clock — a circadian rhythm. Melatonin activates nighttime processes: collagen synthesis, cell division, DNA repair. In cases of disrupted sleep patterns or stress, topical melatonin helps "remind" the skin when it's time to regenerate.
Protection from UV and photoaging
Melatonin and its metabolites protect against UV-induced DNA damage and lipid peroxidation. Applied before sleep after daytime UV exposure, it helps restore damaged cells. Reduces photoaging with regular use.

Is melatonin a hormone in cream?

Topical melatonin in cosmetic concentrations (< 0.1%) acts locally as an antioxidant — it does not enter the bloodstream in significant amounts and does not affect the systemic level of the hormone. It is not a hormonal agent. But if in doubt, consult a doctor, especially during pregnancy.
