Hydroxyethylcellulose
A natural thickener based on cellulose — hydroxyethylcellulose provides gels and serums with that characteristic smooth, jelly-like texture without a film feel. One of the most popular thickeners in Korean gel creams and water-based formulas.
What is it?
Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a cellulose derivative (plant polysaccharide) modified with hydroxyethyl groups for water solubility. In INCI: Hydroxyethylcellulose. A powder that dissolves in water and forms clear or semi-transparent gels. Stable over a wide pH range (2–12) — compatible with AHA, BHA, and vitamin C.
The main gelling agent and thickener in water-based serums, gel creams, gel toners, and eye contours. Provides formulas with a jelly texture and helps evenly distribute actives on the skin. Widely used in K-beauty glass skin formulas.

Main Actions
Hydroxyethylcellulose makes the formula more convenient: thickens, stabilizes, and helps evenly distribute actives. Its light film can reduce the feeling of tightness, but for pronounced hydration or barrier restoration, humectant and lipid actives are needed alongside.
