What is it?
Ectoin (1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid) is an osmotically active substance (compatible solute) synthesized by halophilic and thermophilic bacteria for survival in extreme conditions. In cosmetics, it is obtained through the fermentation of Halomonas elongata. Trademark Ectoin® (Bitop AG). Concentration in cosmetics: 0.1–1%. Stable over a wide range of pH and temperatures.
