Caprylyl Methicone

The lightest in the class of silicones — ultra-thin branched methicone with a caprylic (C8) tail. Provides silkiness and frizz protection with minimal product feel on skin and hair. Ideal for fine hair and lightweight sunscreen textures.

What is it?

Caprylyl Methicone (C8-methicone) — methylsiloxane with one caprylic (octyl, C8) substitute on the side chain of the silicone backbone. Due to its branched structure and short C8 tail — very low viscosity (~2–3 cSt) and high volatility. INCI: Caprylyl Methicone. Completely liquid at room temperature. Key property: excellent spreading without leaving a film — "apply and forget." Popular in Korean and Japanese cosmetics since the 2010s as an alternative to cyclosiloxanes (banned in Canada and the EU).

Lightweight SPF fluids and toners, leave-in hair sprays, anti-humidity serums, dry oil for the body — where a silicone effect is needed without the feeling of product presence.

Key Benefits

Ultra-light texture — "invisible protection"
Caprylyl Methicone is so light (~2 cSt) that it is practically unnoticeable after application — no residual layer, greasiness, or film. At the same time, it provides silkiness and protection from external factors for skin and hair. An ideal alternative to cyclopentasiloxane (D5) when a lightweight texture is needed without regulatory risks.
Frizz protection without buildup on hair
Unlike dimethicone and cetyl dimethicone, caprylyl methicone does not build up on hair with regular use. It protects against moisture and frizz in humid climates while leaving natural volume and movement. Recommended for fine and normal hair, which heavy silicones "weigh down" volume.
Improvement of SPF and BB cream textures
Caprylyl Methicone is a "sensory modifier" in sunscreens: transforms heavy, waxy, or greasy formulas with mineral filters (ZnO, TiO₂) into lightweight, silky textures. It does not affect the activity of filters and the stability of the formula. A standard component of Korean lightweight SPF fluids and cushion compacts.

Caprylyl Methicone vs Cyclopentasiloxane (D5)

Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) — the most popular lightweight silicone until the 2020s. Banned in the EU for rinse-off (> 0.1%) due to environmental impact. Caprylyl Methicone — a functional replacement: similar lightness, but non-volatile (no PBT issues). Most top Korean sunscreens have switched to caprylyl methicone as the main lightweight silicone. Do not confuse with phenyl trimethicone (shine) or amodimethicone (charge).
