What is it?

Arbutin — a glycoside of hydroquinone found in bearberry. Alpha-arbutin — a synthetic, more stable, and active form. In INCI: Arbutin, Alpha-Arbutin, or Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi Leaf Extract. It inhibits tyrosinase — a key enzyme in melanogenesis.

Used in serums, toners, and creams for brightening. Alpha-arbutin at a concentration of 1–2% is considered an effective therapeutic dose. It pairs well with niacinamide and vitamin C.
