What is it?

Alpha-Arbutin — a synthetic glycoside of hydroquinone (4-hydroxyphenol-α-D-glucopyranoside). The alpha form is more stable and effective than beta-arbutin (natural arbutin from cranberries). Concentration: 0.5–2% in most products, effective from 0.5%. INCI name: Alpha-Arbutin.

Key component in serums and creams for pigmentation: age spots, post-acne PIH, melasma, uneven skin tone. More effective than regular arbutin due to the alpha configuration, which slows down enzymatic breakdown.

Alpha-Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase — the key enzyme in melanin synthesis. Reduces the formation of new pigment in melanocytes. Clinical studies confirm a visible effect at 0.5–1% concentration within 4–8 weeks.

Alpha-Arbutin vs Arbutin vs Kojic Acid

Beta-arbutin (natural) is less effective — it breaks down faster. Alpha-arbutin is more stable and stronger. Kojic acid is effective but less stable in formulas and can be irritating. Alpha-arbutin is the safest choice for long-term pigmentation correction.
