Allantoin
A classic soothing ingredient of plant origin — allantoin accelerates cell renewal, alleviates irritation, and makes the skin softer. It is included in hundreds of products for sensitive skin and after shaving due to its exceptional tolerability.
What is it?
Allantoin (5-ureidohydantoin) is a natural compound found in the root of comfrey (Symphytum officinale), beet juice, and the urine of many mammals. It is synthesized in industry from glyoxylic acid and urea. It is well soluble in water, stable in formulas with a pH of 3–8. It is used in concentrations of 0.1–2%. It is on the FDA's list of approved skin protectants.
A basic component of products for sensitive, irritated, and dry skin. Widely used in aftershave products, for babies, and in dermatological cosmetics. Considered one of the safest cosmetic ingredients.

Main Actions
Most allantoin in cosmetics is of synthetic origin (glyoxylic acid + urea), which does not mean lower quality. Synthetic allantoin is chemically identical to natural allantoin but is more stable and cheaper to produce. Vegans avoid allantoin from animal sources — check for the vegan label on the product.
